EME in any language

When the ABC required Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Emission awareness and measurement training for the national radio operator in Cambodia, Kordia’s EME training course fit the bill.

Kordia had conducted numerous EME measurement and training courses for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation across Australia.

Its reputation and expertise in EME is already well known in the broadcasting industry. However, the added challenge of this assignment was that it was to be conducted it in Khmer – Cambodia’s local language.

Since English was not spoken by any of the participants, additional time had to be allocated for concurrent translations of the entire course.

“It was quite difficult for us to explain the technical nature of RF fields and effects on humans, and the theoretical content of complex equations and formulae,” said Brett Moule, Kordia’s RF consultant. “But we met the challenge of providing a training course in another language, and we really enjoyed it.”

Adding to the challenge, Moule had to provide the on-site EME measurement training while standing knee-deep in floodwater beside an active AM radio mast in Phnom Penh.

Kordia was well up to the task. With a proven track record and reputation as an expert in the field of RF EME assessment compliance and training, Kordia’s previous work for the client had proven its capability and experience.

With a practical, hands-on approach, Kordia proposed a five day training course, which covered in-depth theoretical training, practical exercises, site visits, concurrent translations, creative demonstrations of radio waves, and additional time for language difficulties. Training books were translated into Khmer before the training commenced.

With the right OH & S precautions, the team overcame language and weather barriers and completed the one-week course in November 200 8. Apart from gaining EME experience in Cambodia, our RF consultant may have picked up some conversational Khmer as well.
