Who are the Apple evangelists?

Friday, July 02, 2010

Although the iPhone 4 or the IPAD have not made it (at least officially) to New Zealand yet, I admit I have been caught up in the hype and have been following all the press and market buzz around these two products for some time.

What I am not sure about though ... is it Apple who are masters of marketing creating the hype or is it the legions of Apple converts, including much of the technology media who spread the word like evangelists to the rest of us?

It probably doesn't matter; the result is the same. Any new Apple device is now a 'must have' for a significant part of the market.

I admit if I could have got an IPAD at the peak of the market hype a few months back, I would have brought one. But for some reason New Zealand and Australia are lagging behind the US in gaining official access to these devices.

In hindsight, I most likely saved myself a $1,000 - as now that I have had the opportunity to use the IPAD, I'm not sure that I would have got great value for my dollar.

I'm not saying that the IPAD is not a fantastic device - a number of my friends have one and would not be without them. It just turns out I'm not one of those people - at least not yet!

I'm now wondering if the iPhone 4 can wait until I've got a few more scratches on my iPhone 3 before I make the investment.

Is all the hype a little akin to the Emperor's New Clothes and it's the fact that it's cool and the latest and greatest that is attractive? Or is there really a significant improvement in utility that makes a purchase worthwhile?

Both are valid reasons to buy, but the satisfaction derived from the former is much more short lived.
