Energy and resources (ENR) sector booming

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

The ongoing boom in the Australian resources sector has created a fresh strategic area of focus for us.

Hot spots for emerging activity include coal seam gas developments in Queensland, and natural gas and mining projects in Western Australia.

The coal seam gas sector (CSG) has demonstrated a high demand for telecommunications and monitoring systems, which Kordia has been well placed to take advantage of.

Kordia’s experience in designing, building monitoring and maintaining networks in remote areas has opened up a range of burgeoning opportunities with CSG mine operators.

Kordia cemented its first project in this sector this year, supplying early works for a multi-technology communications solution for a new Queensland based multi-billion dollar gas project.

The tailored solution utilises the broad based technology smarts that Kordia is coveted for and included technologies such as microwave SDH, Fibre, WiFi, WiMAX, telemetry, IP Networking and TETRA. The end to end solution is very unique to Kordia’s capabilities and would normally need to be put together by a consortium of partners.

Kordia’s experience in working in remote areas of Australia saw it win a project to design and construct communications towers for a natural gas project in northern Western Australia.

These foundation contracts will be used as flagships of Kordia’s multi-disciplinary technology approach and rigorous attention to project delivery timeframes.

The resources boom has also been clouded by an industry wide staff shortage, with skilled staff largely being lured to mining projects in West Australia’s Pilbara, depleting the pool of employment resources for other areas.

The mining sector demands telecommunications solutions that are robust, reliable and equipped to work in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable.
Kordia’s engineering expertise and experience in all types of terrain and climate, has been called upon to address these needs.

In parallel, the power utility industry is undergoing a massive transformation.
The new, emerging utility industry has to cope with power generation across new green technologies, platforms and diverse locations.

Against a backdrop of new regulations, power companies are also facing tighter regulatory scrutiny from government while customers are demanding more control and monitoring over their usage patterns and costs.

Kordia telecommunications engineering is helping shape these networks by providing consultancy and design services to power utilities. We expect strong growth in this sector in the near future driven by new demand side networks with smart meters and new supply side networks to manage substations, transformers and circuit breakers.
