The Maritime Operations Centre team's quick response helped save an Auckland anaesthetist, his wife and six children when they got into trouble in stormy, six metre swells on their way to Tonga.

The father Charles Bradfield fashioned a high-frequency radio aerial from fishing line when their yacht, Carenza, was dismasted, managing to make contact with the Taupo maritime radio base, run by to Kordia's Maritime Operations Centre. The family was found soon after by an air force Hercules, and rescued by French warship La Glorieuse.

Captain Tim Nichol, Maritime New Zealand's Manager of Safey and Response Services passed on his compliments:

"Magnificent work during the Carenza incident...  it was brilliant to see this team and operation mentioned in the media [as a result]."

The MOC has assisted around 35,000 boaties since its inception in 1994: providing the right solution at the right time, every time.

That means our customers - and New Zealand boaties - never have to worry.
