SOLAS digital selective calling (DSC) was introduced as a maritime radio service in 1999. A data-based alerting system, it uses structured messages to alert ships and coast stations of impending messages.
SOLAS DSC can send automated emergency radio distress alerts over VHF marine radio, MF and HF marine radio systems.
Indicating the level of priority, and the marine radio frequency requested for ongoing communication, SOLAS DSC receivers sound an alarm whenever a distress call is received.
The DSC system is optimised for use in SOLAS emergency situations. On receipt of a distress alert, the vessel’s name, the nature of its distress, and the last recorded position are all recorded.
Test your emergency radio daily to ensure it is working. You can do this by sending an updated position report. Become familiar with your equipment so you can make contact quickly and efficiently in the case of an emergency.
Maritime Operations Centre monitors internationally designated call and reply SOLAS distress frequencies.
